What is a “Superbill” and How to Use It
Here’s a frequently asked question: “Do you take my insurance?”
Well, yes and no. No, we’re not “in-network” with any insurance provider. And no, we don’t directly bill insurance. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get your insurance to pay some of your visit costs.
At the end of your visit, you’ll directly pay the cost of your visit and labs or procedures at rates we’ll discuss in advance. Then, if you want, we’ll print you out a document called a “superbill.” The superbill is the itemized and CPT-coded (for insurance) list of all the services we provided during your visit, including lab work, procedures and the appropriate “E/M” (evaluation and management) code for the office visit itself. You can submit the superbill to your insurance company and seek reimbursement for these fees. Insurance companies usually have a maximum fee they will pay for each service to an “out of network” provider, and it’s probably not quite what you paid. They also often exclude specific things, like the lab to check your vitamin D level. But most of what we bill is covered by insurance, and if you submit the superbill you’ll usually get reimbursed for at least part of what you paid.
You’ll also be able to use your prescription drug benefits when you pick up any prescribed medications at the pharmacy. They’ll run your insurance as normal and use their usual billing process – pharmacy billing has nothing to do with clinic billing and is totally separate from whether we are “in-network” with your insurance provider.
